TERRORISM
--------------
1. "A RESPONSIBLE U.S. MEDIA SPARED FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
AUTHORITIES IN THE NATIONAL INTEREST," op-ed in left-
of-center Marathi daily, APLA MAHANAGAR: "The U.S.
media should be congratulated for the balanced and
sober coverage of the attempted act of terrorism aboard
a flight that landed in Detroit on Friday. The media
was not in a hurry to hold responsible the Department
of Homeland Security, and particularly the
Transportation Security Administration, which had
obviously failed in tightening layers of security
measures at the nation's airports."
--------------
PAKISTAN
--------------
2. "BLASTS IN KARACHI," editorial in December 30 right-
of-center Urdu daily, HINDUSTAN EXPRESS: "Militant
organizations are waging a war against Pakistan and its
government. Pakistan is not ready to accept that it is
reaping what was sown by the ISI and other Pakistani
agencies. Pakistan never accepted that political use of
terrorism would be dangerous for Pakistan as well as
for its neighbors. It is very easy to blame alien
forces for Shia-Sunni riots in various parts of the
country. It is possible that such alien forces may be
hatching such conspiracies, but it will be harder for
Pakistani leadership to explain who laid the foundation
of thee subversive activities."
--------------
COPENHAGEN
--------------
3. "A NEW ROLE," editorial in December 31 Kolkata
Bengali daily, ANANDABAZAR PATRIKA: "The year 2009 will
remain memorable for various reasons, one of these
being the issue of the environment. The Copenhagen
Summit could not deliver anything. Although a face-
saving 'deal' under the leadership of President Obama
was struck, all hopes and aspirations to check
environmental pollution depend on the industrially
developed nations, as well as on the goodwill of India
and China."
--------------
IRAQ
--------------
4. "FRUITS OF IRAQ WAR," op-ed in December 24 right-of-
center Urdu daily, ETEMAAD: "It is known to all that
the intention of the U.S. and its Western allies behind
NEW DELHI 00002597 002 OF 002
the Iraq invasion was to capture the huge Iraqi oil
reserves. After killing 1.3 million Iraqi Muslims, and
inflicting a loss around $2 trillion, Western powers at
last have gained control over the oil fields. These
destructive and plundering Western forces have been
successful in getting control over the most precious
oil reservoirs of the Middle East."
