COPENHAGEN
--------------
1. "CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE DEVELOPED COUNTRIES,"
editorial in December 21 right-of-center Urdu daily
SIASAT: "The summit at Copenhagen practically failed
miserably because it could not be successful in
finalizing any comprehensive and binding agreement.
Evasion to accept their responsibilities, the developed
countries can never be successful in getting any
agreement accepted unanimously. It is the high time
when the UNO should take its own initiatives to ensure
such an agreement finalized."
2. "DISPUTED COPENHAGEN AGREEMENT," editorial in
December 21 right-of-center Urdu daily RASHTRIYA
SAHARA: "The unbinding Copenhagen climate change
agreement between the U.S and the "Basic" countries is
simply a matter of consolation. It is of no use to
control the global warming. Moreover, the reaction
shown by the poor countries over the agreement may
enhance the difference between the developed countries
and the developing ones."
3. "HEADING TOWARDS THE FUTURE," editorial in December
22 Kolkata Bengali independent ANANDABAZAR PATRIKA:
"Did the Summit end in failure because it gave us a
relatively weak deal like the "Copenhagen Accord"? The
answer is no. Although the accord is not legally
binding on any nations, it has its own implications for
many reasons. So far all previous meetings ended
inconclusively due to America's opposition. It is,
indeed, a big change that the same country is now
taking the lead with its President being the originator
(of the accord). The deal incorporated the primary
promises of the Kyoto Protocol. On the other hand,
China, for the first time, agreed to accept
international scrutiny and maintain transparency. It
is a major gain as far as environmental issues are
concerned. There is no way to deny this achievement of
the Copenhagen Summit."
4. "OUTCOME OF GREED," editorial in December 22 left-
of-center Marathi daily, MAHARASHTRA TIMES: "What was
amiss was the political will to execute the much-needed
steps. Each country, including the U.S., was unwilling
to take the necessary steps, fearing the unpopularity
of those measures back home."
