--------------
PRIME MINISTER SINGH'S WASHINGTON VISIT
--------------

1. "U.S. ASSURANCE," editorial in November 29 Hindi
daily, DAINIK JAGRAN: "Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's
U.S.-visit has been more successful than was expected.
Singh held talks with Obama on the entire gamut of
bilateral relations, the situation in the region and
global challenges like terrorism, climate change and
economic crisis. It is important that the U.S.
expressed its dedication to remove the hurdles in the
way of the civilian nuclear deal and emphasized on
destroying terror networks. Such assurance was much
needed on the anniversary of the Mumbai terror attacks.
Besides that, it was necessary to clear the doubts of
Indians, which made them believe that the Obama
administration was not sensitive about protecting
India's interests. The visit will definitely strengthen
ties, but it remains to be seen if the U.S. will walk
the talk on terrorism directed toward India."

2. "BASIS OF TIES WITH THE U.S.," op-ed in November 29
Hindi daily, DAINIK JAGRAN: "From Prime Minister
Singh's trip, Obama has declared India its crucial
ally. We will have to understand that U.S.-China
friendly relations are in America's national interest
since it has to tide over its huge deficit."

--------------
U.S.-PAKISTAN
--------------

3. "AMERICA CAN BE TRUSTED ONLY IF IT ACTS ON ITS
WORDS," editorial in December 1 centrist Gujarati
daily, DIVYA BASKAR: "While President Barack Obama's
recent warning letter to Zardari is certainly welcome,
Obama would be making a grave mistake by just relying
on Pakistan's leaders for some tangible action against
Pakistan-based terrorist groups. We must also not
forget the fact that AMERICA and the international
community woke up to the danger of global terrorism
only after the dastardly 9/11 attacks. However, for
the fear of loss of face in the Muslim world, AMERICA
has continued to be friends with Pakistan. Now that
America has realized this grave threat, it must ensure
that these warnings see some action as history tells us
that the Pakistani brand of terrorists doesn't succumb
to such warnings."
