This countrywide cable reports on relevant media reaction/opinion from India's large non-English press. The Mission reports on English-language media via email through the daily "Early Edition" summary. -------------- HEADLEY CASE/ TERRORISM -------------- ¶1. "JUSTIFIED WORRIES," editorial in November 17 right- of-center Hindi daily, DAINIK JAGRAN: "After the Headley case has come into the limelight, the focus of the Indian security establishment has shifted to Woodstock and Doon schools in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand. Keeping in view the seriousness of the threat to the two schools, steps are being taken to prevent any untoward incident. With hundreds of international students, these schools are indeed soft targets for terrorists. The highest possible security attention must be given to this area." -------------- INDIA-CHINA -------------- ¶2. "CHINA'S DIPLOMATIC FRONT," oped in November 17 right-of-center Hindi daily, DAINIK JAGRAN: "The Chinese are using Pakistan in their campaign against India. China's antagonism clearly shows in its actions. Chinese maps showing distortions in India's boundaries, and China's opposition to the Dalai Lama's recent visit to Arunchachal Pradesh show China's belligerent attitude. China does not understand democratic and social values, so there's no use for civility. With China, war is a much better option than diplomacy." -------------- AFGHANISTAN -------------- ¶3. "FOR THE GOOD OF INDIA AND PAKISTAN," oped in November 17 Hindi daily, DAINIK JAGRAN: "Pakistan is in the midst of a do-or-die struggle. It needs help and understanding. The priority of the two countries should be to have an accord on Afghanistan. With Abdullah Abdullah withdrawing from the contest for the office of president because of alleged rigged polling, the country's leadership has been ruptured. Even a united Afghanistan is not strong enough to confront the Taliban. The divided one has no chance. New Delhi and Islamabad may be able to bring the divided leaders together. America's stake in Afghanistan is only to the extent of fighting against Al Qaeda and the Taliban. India and Pakistan have a long-term interest in Afghanistan." WHITE
