"FROM EIGHT TO TWENTY," editorial in September 27 nationalist Bengali ANANDABAZAR PATRIKA: "That economic changes are sweeping the entire world once again became clear at Pittsburg, with the G-20 proving itself to be the new driving force. This proclamation has several significances. No doubt, the center of gravity of the world's economy is veering more around the developing world. The Pittsburg Summit is the formal recognition of this change. President Obama's policy in this context raises the hope that it will help in sustaining this achievement, at least in its own interest." -------------- INDO-PAK RELATIONS -------------- ¶2. "TALKS WITH PAKISTAN," editorial in September 29 right-of-center Hindi daily, DAINIK JAGRAN: "It is a matter of satisfaction that India made it very clear to Pakistan that the resumption of broad-based dialogue hinges on tangible investigations and purposeful prosecution by Islamabad of all those involved in the Mumbai terror attacks. Pakistan really has no intentions of cooperating with India on the Mumbai attacks. It is just biding time, and in fact using India's patience to discredit it. India needs to move beyond Mumbai and chart out some other strategy to expose Pakistan in front of the international community." ¶3. "FOREIGN MINISTERS' MEET," editorial in September 29 right-of-center Urdu daily, MUNSIF: "It is said that Indo-Pak talks were successful, useful and positive. India explained that not only terrorists, but the whole system of terrorism should be wiped off. Only then relations with Pakistan may be restored. After this explicit Indian stand, the ball is apparently in the court of Pakistan. However, it does not mean that India does not have any responsibility. India, too, has to do a lot to restore normalcy in relations." ¶4. "INDO-PAK FOREIGN MINISTERS' TALKS," editorial in September 29 right-of-center Urdu daily, SIASAT: "It is the internal helplessness of Pakistan government that terrorists, including Hafiz Saeed, cannot be apprehended and prosecuted in Pakistan because these organizations and their chiefs hold high status, respect and prestige amongst the people. These people run a parallel government in Pakistan. Today the two major countries of the subcontinent are confronting each other, daggers drawn. It seems to be a part of a planned conspiracy to destroy the regional stability. "DON'T BE ON THE DEFENSIVE, GO ON THE OFFENSIVE," op-ed in September 29 nationalist Hindi daily, RASHTRIYA SAHARA: "The US has floated a draft resolution at the UNSC asking non-NPT countries, including India, to sign the treaty. Instead of being defensive on the NPT, India needs to go on the offensive, or else we will be marginalized and militarily paralyzed. Neither will we be able to test, nor ever acquire weapons for our defense. This is the time when India can rise up to assume the rightful status as the spokesperson of the third world. India should not cow down in front of the five bullies -- let us engage the entire United Nations. Can our leaders rise up to the occasion?" ¶6. "NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION," editorial in September 29, right-of-center Islamist Urdu, DAWAT: "Nobody can deny that eradication of every sort of weapon of mass destruction from the world is essential for world peace. And concrete initiatives should be taken to ensure it. But implementation of a principle should be uniform without any prejudice. Exempting some nations and binding down others cannot be justified, because deadly weapons are dangerous for the entire world." ROEMER
