1. (C) Foreign Secretary Menon told Charge on June 26 that he
would be traveling with National Security Adviser Narayanan
to the Maldives June 29-30 to address their growing concern
over Maldivian internal stability. Menon related that India
feared the one "stable" nation in the region was at risk,
expressing dismay over the current "disconnect" between the
newly elected government and the Maldivian Constitutional
Assembly.
2. (C) Menon and Narayanan are also likely to put pressure on
the Maldivian government to monitor Lashkar-e-Taayba (LeT)
activity in its territory. Expressing his concern over
increasing radicalization and LeT involvement in the
Maldives, Menon pointed out that 30 or more Maldivian
individuals had been either killed or captured in SWAT.
India would like to see the Maldivian government do as much
as possible to stem LeT's activities there.
