1. (SBU) External Affairs Minister Krishna, in a meeting with
his South Korean counterpart Yu Myung-hwan in Delhi June 23,
agreed that it was "important for the DPRK to return to the
Six-Party Talks," according to a press release from the
Ministry. Indian media characterized the statement as "a
step forward" from Krishna's May 25 statement following North
Korea's nuclear test. At that time, the Minister had said
that "for the DPRK to conduct such a test in violation of its
international commitments would be unfortunate," adding,
"Like others in the international community, we are concerned
about the adverse effect on peace and security in that region
of such tests." (NOTE: Media mis-reported that Krishna
accepted an invitation to visit North Korea; in fact, he will
visit South Korea. END NOTE.)
2. (C) National Security Advisor Jones raised UN Security
Council Resolution 1847 enforcement (reftel) in his meeting
with Indian Prime Minister Singh and National Security
Advisor Narayanan June 25-26, reported Septel. Post faxed
reftel demarche to Ministry of External Affairs Joint
Secretary for Disarmament and International Security Gaddam
Dharmendra June 25, who was not available for an immediate
response. Post will continue to follow up.
