1. (C) SRSG for Chad Victor Angelo (STRICTLY PROTECT) called
me this morning from his vacation in Brussels to inform us
that the UNSYG was plabnning to name Ibrahim Gambari SRSG in
Sudan to succeed current SRSG Adada.
2. (C) Angelo said he was passing this information to us in
light of intense USG interest in Sudan, including S/USSES GEN
Gration's efforts, and that the USG might find this advance
information useful. He declined to elaborate.
3. (C) Angelo said that he did not plan to share this
information with other countries and asked us not to discuss
this outside of USG channels here. I assured him that that
would be the case.
4. (C) Angelo declined to comment further on this
information.
5. (C) Angelo arrived in Brussels from Geneva, where he was
in meetings with the UNSYG. He plans to stay in Brussels
until late next week, then return to Chad, when I might have
the opportunity to discuss this with him in person more
fully, if the Department so desires.
