1. We delivered reftel demarche to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Americas Desk on September 14. On September 15, we followed up with
contacts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to push for the PM's
participation at the event. Ministry contacts said they are
currently working on the PM's schedule and will highlight the
importance of his attendance to the PM's staff.
2. Separately, during a September 15 donor coordination meeting on
drought relief, Econ/C urged Prime Minister Odinga's Senior Economic
Advisor to ensure that the PM attended the Secretary's UNGA food
security event. The advisor said he would encourage the PM to
attend and that he expected him to do so. The PM is currently
planning to depart New York that evening for engagements in Boston.
The Ambassador is sending a personal letter to the PM urging his
participation.
