1. (C) While making other demarches to Ambassador Muhammad al
Khusaibi, the Chief of the American Affairs Department of the Omani
MFA on September 15, P/E Chief previewed the reftel UNGA food
security event co-hosted by the Secretary (the letter and draft
statement have been transmitted to the ministry under cover of a
diplomatic note). Al Khusaibi expressed great interest in the
event, noted the date, and said he believes Omani Minister
Responsible for Foreign Affairs Yusuf bin Alawi - who will head
Oman's UNGA delegation - will very likely be interested in
attending. Al Khusaibi added that food security is of great
interest to Oman.
2. (SBU) Oman's Minister of Commerce and Industry Maqbul bin Ali
bin Sultan has recently said that he chairs a high level committee
which is to study all aspects of the food security issue. Oman,
similar to some of its GCC neighbors, is considering buying land in
Africa to farm for Oman's domestic consumption. Oman imports most
of its food, including all of its grain, and was severely impacted
by the 2008 food price spike.
