1. (S/NF) This is in response to reftel request for additional
information. Mohammed al-Hassan, Political Affairs Director for
Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs Yusef bin Alawi (YBA),
told the DCM and poloff in a May 31 conversation that the Iranians
had not approached Oman with any information concerning its
anti-piracy efforts. Al-Hassan noted that he followed all Iran
information very closely.
2. (S/NF) Comment: Al-Hassan works closely with YBA and is
generally very forthright with the embassy. If he is unaware of
any requests, it is likely that Iran has not approached the MFA on
this issue. However, the MFA is not always in the loop on security
issues, so it is possible that Iran has engaged other elements of
the Omani government. End Comment.
