(SBU) Post submitted ref A points via diplomatic note February 22
to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs encouraging the Sultanate to
support the nomination of the U.S. candidate, Judge Mark Painter,
for the UN Appeals Tribunal. During a February 28 meeting with
Counselor Mohammed al-Hassan, Political Affairs Director for the
Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, the DCM delivered ref B
demarche and urged the Omani government to vote in favor of Judge
Painter's candidacy. Al-Hassan stated that Oman would give serious
consideration to Judge Painter's nomination but did not commit to
voting for him.
