SUBJECT: DEMARCHE DELIVERED: OMAN REVIEWING U.S. WTO REMANUFACTURING
INITIATIVE
(SBU) On November 3, EconOff and an Economic Secretary from the
Japanese EMBASSY in Oman delivered the U.S. WTO Remanufacturing
Initiative demarche to Hamed Al Rawahi, MFA Deputy Chief of the
Economic & Technical Co-operation Department for Arab and
International Economic Affairs. Prior to the meeting EconOff
provided Al Rawahi with background materials and the negotiating
text. Al Rawahi was noncommittal and advised EconOff to contact the
Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI),Oman's technical experts,
on the matter as well as send a formal letter to the MFA seeking
Oman's support of the initiative. EconOff provided the text and
background materials to the proper individuals at the MOCI and sent
a diplomatic note to the MFA, formally requesting Oman's support of
the initiative. Post will report any further developments in Oman's
position septel.
