(C) On May 8, EST Officer delivered reftel demarche
regarding USG support for Japan's Ambassador Yukiya Amano in
the upcoming second round of voting for IAEA Director General
to MFA Department of Disarmament and Security Affairs First
Secretary Olga Kuznetsova. Kuznetsova responded that Russia
had not yet established a preferred candidate and was
carefully reviewing all five individuals. She indicated that
all are considered to be strong candidates. She said that
before any final decision is made, Ambassador Berdennikov,
the RF Board of Governors (BOG) representative, would consult
with other BOG members to determine if a consensus candidate
is emerging.
