(U) Summary: Embassy selected seven projects for the FY 2010 Ambassador's Special Self Help Program with total allocations of USD 65,000. These projects will become official at a signing ceremony in January 2010. Embassy estimates that approximately 5,900 Zambians will benefit as a result of these projects. ¶2. (U) Detailed project information for 2010 SSH Fund Grantees: Grantee Name: Foundation for Wildlife and Habitat Conservation (FWHC),Mpika, Northern Province Agreement Number: SZA-6000-GR001 Project Title: Introduce high-yield beans to local farmers who are former poachers Amount of Grant: USD 15,000 Description of Activity: This area of northern Zambia is heavily poached. The project will work with former poachers-turned-farmers to help them improve crop yields by introducing high-yield beans and teach farmers best farming practices and methodologies. Working with Foundation for Wildlife and Habitat Conservation, this project will help these farmers support themselves and their families and achieve income, seed and food security. Estimated Number of Beneficiaries: Approximately 450 local farmers and family members, including 30 men, 40 women, 145 boys and 240 girls, will benefit from this project. Status of Project: Programmed in December 2009; launching in January 2010 Fiscal Year Funds: 2009 Grantee Name: Kansobe Community School, Kasama, Northern Province Agreement Number: SZA-6000-GR002 Project Title: Build two additional classrooms for the Kansobe Community School Amount of Grant: USD 12,000 Description of Activity: Originally built in 2004, Kansobe Community School currently accommodates in two classrooms children attending kindergarten to grade five from six surrounding villages. As a result, the school needs additional classrooms to accommodate these students. Number of Beneficiaries: 640 men and boys; 720 women and girls Status of Project: Programmed December 2009; launching in January 2010 Fiscal Year Funds: 2009 Grantee Name: Tree Crops and Horticultural Association (TCHA),Mongu, Western Province Agreement Number: SZA-6000-GR003 Project Title: Purchase irrigation equipment, seedlings, and plant 50 hectare plot Amount of Grant: USD 10,000 Description of Activity: TCHA will purchase and install irrigation equipment, including pumps, pipes and sprinklers, to irrigate a 50 hectare plot of land. Farmers plant, harvest and sell crops that help them earn income. This equipment will help them increase yields and become self-sufficient. Number of Beneficiaries: Approximately 250 men and boys; 205 women and girls Status of Project: Programmed December 2009; launching in January 2010 Fiscal Year Funds: 2009 Grantee Name: David Livingstone High School, Livingstone, Southern Province Agreement Number: SZA-6000-GR004 Project Title: Build two classrooms for special needs students Amount of Grant: USD 9,000.00 Description of Activity: David Livingstone High School first opened as a primary school in 1930 and has educated high school students since 2001. The high school must accommodate a growing population of special needs students, particularly those who are developmentally delayed. These two classrooms will give the school space to assist and educate these students. Number of Beneficiaries: 28 special needs students, including 17 boys and 11 girls Status of Project: Programmed December 2009; launching in January 2010 Fiscal Year Funds: 2009 Grantee Name: St. Patrick's Girls Basic School, Lusaka Agreement Number: SZA-6000-GR005 Project Title: Build a school library Amount of Grant: USD 7,000 LUSAKA 00000973 002 OF 002 Description of Activity: This school serving 1,800 girls aged four to 14 (pre-kindergarten to grade 9) from disadvantaged families does not have a library. As a result, students lack access to reading materials. The new library will allow the school access to materials to help them develop their reading skills. Number of Beneficiaries: 1,800 female students Status of Project: Programmed December 2009; launching in January 2010 Fiscal Year Funds: 2009 Grantee Name: Josephine Fogg Nursery and Primary School, Kafue, Lusaka Province Agreement Number: SZA-6000-GR006 Project Title: Construct toilets Amount of Grant: USD 7,000 Description of Activity: Since its inception in 1986, this school has grown from 70 to nearly 600 students, from pre-kindergarten to grade nine. The school has 12 classrooms and must double shift; most students attend school four to five hours per day. Because it lacks toilet facilities, the school cannot be academically accredited by the Zambian government or administer exams for older students, requiring them to test at other schools. Toilets will allow the school to comply with national education guidelines and achieve accreditation. Number of Beneficiaries: Currently 267 male and 308 female students ranging in age from two to 15 years Status of Project: Programmed December 2009; launching in January 2010 Fiscal Year Funds: 2009 Grantee Name: Programme for Vulnerable Children and Women (PVCW),Mpika, Northern Province Agreement Number: SZA-6000-GR007 Project Title: Construct toilets and borehole (well) Amount of Grant: USD 5,000 Description of Activity: The 1,500 residents of a rural community near Mpika live in extreme poverty and do not have access to clean drinking water or toilets. This project will build community toilets and dig a borehole (well) to provide the community with safe drinking water. Number of Beneficiaries: More than 620 men and boys; 580 women and girls Status of Project: Programmed December 2009; launching in January 2010 Fiscal Year Funds: 2009 ¶3.
