SUBJECT: SLOVENIA PRESENTS CANDIDATURE FOR MEMBERSHIP OF
EXECUTIVE BOARD OF UNDP/UNPFA

1. (U) Embassy received a Note Verbale from the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs on February 5. Text follows:

2. (U) BEGIN TEXT. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the
Republic of Slovenia presents its compliments to the Embassy
of the United States of America in Ljubljana and has the
honour to communicate that the Government of the Republic of
Slovenia has presented its candidature for membership of the
Executive Board of the United Nations Development
Programme/United Nations Population Fund (UNDP/UNPFA).
Elections will be held in the United Nations Economic and
Social Council (ECOSOC) in April 2009.

In January 2009, the Group of Eastern European States
endorsed Slovenia's candidature and supported the agreement
reached by Slovenia and Estonia on sharing the term
2010-2012: Slovenia will serve on the Executive board in the
first year (2010),and will be succeeded by Estonia for the
following two years (2011/2012). We firmly believe in
cooperation among nations, especially in this important
period that raises new development challenges.

Slovenia attaches great importance to UNDP/UNPFA activities,
particularly in the areas of poverty alleviation, sustainable
development and gender mainstreaming. Membership of the
UNDP/UNPFA Executive Board will bring Slovenia even closer to
the actual needs on the ground. The Ministry has the honour
to enclose herewith an aide-memoire that contains further
information on Slovenia's activities in the fields of
development and humanitarian aid. (Note: The aide-memoire
faxed to IO/RHS on February 13.)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia
avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Embassy of
the United States of America in Ljubljana the assurances of
its highest consideration. END TEXT.
