Portugal accepts the invitation to join the Piracy Contact
Group and will be represented by the Portuguese mission to
the United Nations in New York. Based on the reftel
demarche, the Portuguese MFA has begun to develop an internal
division of responsibilities for the issue, including the
Africa, International Organizations, and Security and Defense
departments. Interlocutors caution us that even after this
internal division is complete, the Portuguese UN mission will
remain the lead point of contact.
