(SBU) SUMMARY: Poleconoff delivered reftel points on October 23 to Goncalo Silvestre of the Portuguese Ministy of Foreign Affairs' Office of International Political Organizations. Post received on November 2 a note verbale from the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirming that Portugal will support the candidacy of Lucretia Myers to the International Civil Service Commission during the elections on November 6, 2009. END SUMMARY. ¶2. (SBU) The following is an unofficial translation of a note verbale received by Post from the Portuguese MFA dated October 27, 2009. BEGIN TEXT: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs presents its compliments to the Embassy of the United States of America in Lisbon and has the honor to inform that Portugal will support the candidacy of Lucretia Myers to the International Civil Service Commission during the elections that will take place on November 6, 2009, in New York. Portugal is confident that this further expression of support for U.S. candidates will further reinforce the good bilateral relationship between the two countries. In this regard, the MFA notes Portugal's candidature to the UN Security Council (2011-2012) for which we hope to count on the valuable support of the United States of America. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Embassy of the United States of America in Lisbon the assurances of its highest consideration.
