SUBJECT: UPDATE ON DAILY ROUTINES OF TWO GUANTANAMO
DETAINEES IN PORTUGAL
REF: LISBON 530
Classified By: POL/ECON COUNSELOR RICHARD REITER, FOR 1.4B AND D.
1. (C/NF) Further to information provided reftel regarding
the two Syrians transfered from Guantanamo to Portugal on
August 28, at our request the Portuguese Immigration and
Border Service (SEF),which adminsters the resettlement, has
provided further details on the transferees' daily routines.
2. (C/NF) Khantumani and Dokhan scrupulously carry out their
religious duties --daily prayers, halal diets, restrictions
on contact with women-- and particularly during the Ramadan
period. In addition to their daily Portuguese language
studies, they are responsible for keeping the house clean
where they reside (they are staying in a GOP safehouse in the
Lisbon area with 24/7 government security escorts); doing
their own shopping, cooking and washing their own clothes.
They are provided pocket money to purchase their food and
clothing items.
3. (C/NF) They punctually request to watch television: BBC,
Al Jazeera, CNN, and wrestling programs. (The U.S. pro
wrestling show "WWE" is shown twice weekly on Portuguese TV).
Currently they have only six hours of Internet access per
day, because their "incorrect use" damaged the computer that
was provided to them (nfi). They frequently request cel
phone access to contact their families, and in Khantumani's
case, his "father" in Guantanamo.
