(C) Pol/Econ Counselor on April 1 delivered reftel demarche
to Joao Neves da Costa, the Middle East and Maghreb Director
at the Portuguese MFA. Costa concurred with the view that
the peace process can only make progress through adherence to
the Quartet Principles. He also noted that the peace process
would be a useful topic for discussion in the EU Council, but
is not on the agenda in the immediate future. He asked for a
readout of General Soliman's March 16 meetings in Washington,
and we told him that the Egyptians and PA have expressed
commitment to the Quartet Principles.
