REF: STATE 116264
CLASSIFIED BY: P. Michael McKinley, Ambassador; REASON: 1.4(B),(D)
(C) Pol/C spoke November 16 with MFA Director General for Human
Rights Juan Pablo Vegas, who said the Government of Peru's position
on these country specific resolutions at the UNGA was identical to
that of the USG. Vegas emphasized that Peru opposed "no action"
motions as a matter of principle, and would vote against them. He
added that Peru would support the substantive resolutions against
Burma, Iran and the DPRK, noting that the Iran's post-election
crackdown had highlighted the problems there and that the DPRK
would likely find itself isolated in the votes.
