1. On May 26, econoff delivered reftel demarche to Ministry
of Foreign Affairs Asian Department Counselor Rashid
Al-Hajeri. In response to a query about the USD 49 million
commitment made by Kuwait at the Pakistan Donor's conference
in Tokyo in April, Hajeri confirmed that this contribution
referred to a previous commitment made by Kuwait to assist in
the reconstruction of areas in Pakistan that had suffered
major earthquake damage. This was also confirmed separately
by a Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development official.
Hajeri gave no indication of the liklihood of further GoK
assistance, but said due to the humanitarian nature of the
request that any further GoK assistance likely would be
channeled through the Kuwait Red Crescent Society.
