1. (C) POLCOUNS on April 19 raised reftel points with Rashed
Al-Hajiri, Acting Deputy Director of MFA's Asia and Africa
Department. In delivering the demarche, POLCOUNS urged the
GOK to press Iran to show flexibility and seize the
opportunity for a discussion with the E3 3 Political
Directors and also to consider the possibility of making
public expressions of support for the E3 3 approach.
2. (C) Hajiri, in response, offered only the GOK's
boilerplate position on Iran's nuclear program, which is to
say the GOK "supports dialogue and peaceful negotiations."
Hajiri assured POLCOUNS that he would convey our message up
MFA's chain of command.
3. (C) Comment: The GOK is deeply worried about Iran's
nuclear program and has consistently argued for patient
dialogue rather than belligerent action to rein the Iranians
in. We believe it is likely the GOK will support the
suggested P3 3 approach as one of many possible avenues of
dialogue. We will continue to plumb MFA interlocutors on
their response.
