1. (SBU) Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak expressed "concern"
about the DPRK nuclear tests to reporters on May 26, saying
that "North Korea's display of nuclear capability will
further heighten the tension in the Korean peninsula and
affect the whole East Asian region." Najib hoped that the
issue could be dealt with through the six-party talks and
through the UN Security Council.
2. (C) Shazryll Zahiran, Principal Assistant Secretary in the
MFA,s Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Section, told POLOFF
this afternoon that the Foreign Minister's office is set to
release a statement about the tests as well, pending final
clearance by the Minister. That statement had not been
released as of the time this cable was transmitted.
