(C) Poloff utilized reftel points, requesting countries to
urge Burma to release Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest, on
May 11 with the Malaysian Foreign Ministry's Cambodia, Laos,
Myanmar, and Vietnam division. Poloff followed up on May 14
with the division's Principal Assistant Secretary Raja
Saifful. Saifful stated that the Ministry was "very
concerned that the military junta will continue" to keep Aung
San Suu Kyi in prison, and that this was "one of the most
pressing matters" briefed to Foreign Minister Anifah prior to
his trip to Washington for a May 14 meeting with the
Secretary. Saifful expressed appreciation for our points and
pledged to share these with MFA Secretary General Rastam.
Saifful, however, did not indicate whether Malaysia had
raised this issue with the Burmese regime. We will follow up
with any additional response.
