1. (SBU) The Embassy received on April 21 a diplomatic note
from the Malaysian Foreign Ministry dated April 20, no. CU
213/09, in response to our previous request for Malaysia's
support for the U.S candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council
(reftels). The operative text of the note follows:
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia presents its
compliments to the Embassy of the United States of America
and has the honour to refer to the latter's Note Verbale No:
372 dated 15 April 2009 on the United State's candidacy to
the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term
2009-2012. The Ministry would like to inform that Malaysia
will give its positive consideration to the candidacy of the
United States.
"Malaysia likewise will present its candidacy to the same
body for the term 2010-2013. In this regard, the Government
of Malaysia would be honoured if the United States could
extend its support to Malaysia's candidacy during the
election in May 2010."
2. (SBU) Embassy requests Department's instructions for
responding to Malaysia's diplomatic note.
