RESOLUTION
REF: STATE 27376 - DEMARCHE INSTRUCTIONS
1. (SBU) Poloff delivered reftel demarche on March 24 to
Farisha binti Salman, Assistant Secretary for Multilateral
Political Affairs in Malaysia's Foreign Ministry. Farisha
stated the "points are duly noted" and pledged to share the
information within the Ministry but otherwise provided no
immediate response.
2. (SBU) Comment: Malaysia has appeared very active in the
OIC supporting the resolution. The government promoted the
concept of taking international legal action against
"defamation of religion" during the June 2008 Islam and the
West conference, hosted by Malaysia and which featured the
OIC Secretary General. On this basis, we believe it very
likely that Malaysia would vote in favor of the resolution.
