1. (SBU) Mission delivered Ref A diplomatic note announcing
the United States' candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council
(HRC) to a senior officer responsible for human rights at the
Department of Foreign Affairs and asked for GOI support. We
also delivered the non-paper on "Human Rights Commitments and
Pledges of the United States of America," and discussed the
points.
2. (C) In response, Director for Human Rights Wiwiek
Setyawati sent DepPol/C the following message on April 16,
pledging GOI support for our candidacy: "Although it hasn't
been confirmed by a formal instruction from my Minister, it
is beyond dispute that Indonesia will strongly support the
U.S. candidature for the HRC membership." She added,
"Welcome to the Club of the Human Rights Council. Hope
you'll get a lot of support."
