1. (C) SUMMARY: Mission has encouraged Indonesia to support
UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) consultative status
for the Democracy Coalition Project (DCP) and deferral back
to the NGO Committee for the Dynamic Christian World Mission
Foundation (DCWMF). Missio*n underscored the importance of
having a wide spectrum of views in order to enhance debate
and advance the work of the United Nations. END SUMMARY.
2. (SBU) Mission has reviewed reftel points regarding the
ECOSOC status of the two NGOs with the Indonesian government.
On July 6, poloff reviewed the points with Bunyan Saptomo,
Director for North American Affairs at the Department of
Foreign Affairs (DEPLU).
3. (C) Miission underscored the importance of having a
plurality of viewpoints at the United Nations in order to
enhance debate. Mission asked for GOI support in voting with
the U.S. to overturn the decision of the NGO Committee
against DCP accreditation and then voting in favor of a
resolution to grant special consultative status to DCP.
Additionally, Mission asked te GOI for its support in vvoting
with the U.S. to overturn the recommendation of the NGO
Committee to close the application of DCWMF for accreditation
and then voting in favor of a draft resolution to send
DCWMF's application back to the Committee for deliberation.
4. (C) Our GOI interlocutor had no immediate comment about
whether the GOI would vote with the U.S., but noted the
importance of promoting diverse views. Bunyan said he would
study the documents and review with the appropriateGOI
offices and agencies.
