1. (C) POLOFF joined British and French Embassy
counterparts for a June 12 discussion of the UN Special
Rapporteur on Sudan with officials at Affairs at the
Department of Foreign Affairs (DEPLU). Using Ref A points,
poloff underscored the importance of extending the Special
Rapporteur's mandate for an additional year to address the
serious human rights situation in Sudan. We also noted that
an effective Special Rapporteur was essential for the
credibility of the UN Human Rights Council.
2. (C) Indonesia would not finalize its position until its
until it had reviewed the final mandate resolution according
to Muhammad Anshor, an official in DEPLU's Directorate of
Multilateral Affairs. Indonesia hopes that the EU and the
Africa Group will reach a consensus while drafting the
resolution. Anshor added that Indonesia believes the
resolution will not be effective unless the regional group
supports it.
