1. (C) Responding to reftel briefing, Kamran Akhtar,
Disarmament Director at Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, told PolOff on October 6 that the Government of
Pakistan is pleased with the results of the October 1 P5 1
talks with Iran. In particular, the possible reduction in
Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium hexafluoride by sending
it to Russia is a very welcome development, Akhtar stated.
(In previous conversations, Akhtar had expressed concerns
about Iran's growing stockpile of enriched uranium.)
Furthermore, he continued, the agreed visit of IAEA
inspectors to the new nuclear site in Qom is also positive.
However, Akhtar cautioned, "the IAEA must ensure that all of
the enriched uranium is accounted for." While Pakistan
believes Iran should live up to its international
commitments, including UNSC resolutions, Akhtar said, the GOP
is unlikely to make public statements to this effect or raise
the issue with Iran directly. "In our bilateral
conversations with Iran, we do not discuss nuclear issues,"
he stated.
