1. (C) PolOff delivered June 2 reftel demarche to MFA UN-III
Director Dr. Ahsan Nabeel in support of the U.S. candidate
for the United Nations International Civil Service Commission
(UN ICSC). Nabeel noted that the ICSC election was not
expected until November. While he committed to discuss the
issue now with Pakistan's mission to the UN, he doubted
Pakistan would decide on whom they would support until much
closer to the election, or at least after the nomination
period had closed.
2. (C) After speaking with his UN mission, Nabeel called June
8 to reiterate his initial points, and further noted that,
according to the mission in New York, four other countries
had already approached Pakistan for support -- Germany,
Brazil, Italy and Japan. He also mentioned confusion on the
part of his UN mission whether four or five seats were open
for the Western European and Other States Group (WEOG). He
committed to having more insight on Pakistan's intentions
within the month.
