SUBJECT: DEMARCHE DELIVERED - SUPPORT FOR U.S. CANDIDATE TO ICSC
REF: STATE 55499
In a June 3 conversation with MFA International Organizations
official Le Minh Thoa, Deputy PolCouns urged Vietnam to support the
U.S. candidate for the UN
International Civil Service Commission, Lucretia Myers. Per reftel,
he stressed Ms. Myers' background and experience, including prior
service on the ICSC, as well as the fact that she is the only
non-European candidate from the Western European and Others Group.
In response, Thoa noted that the election was still four months away
and said that Vietnam would likely not begin considering its
position until August at the earliest. She thanked us for the
demarche, however, and said that she would forward Ms. Myers' CV,
along with our strong recommendation, to her director general for
consideration.
