(SBU) Pol-EconCouns made ref B demarche to MFA Americas
Department September 17. After passing through the MFA
Department for Global Cooperation and Economy, the issue
eventually made its way to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture
and Fisheries, which has the Danish FAO
membership-contribution in its budget. According to Henrik
Kroell, Head of Department in that Ministry, Denmark and the
other EU members are "in principle supporting a maintenance
budget - but with some downward adjustments (efficiency
savings, etc.)" for the FAO. The aim for Denmark "and the
other EU members" is "to find a common ground for a
compromise in the Finance Committee" of FAO. Kroell noted
that the U.S. delegation in the Finance Committee had "not
said anything like zero nominal growth or zero real growth,"
but had "basically just stressed that the budget is too
high."
