CONFERENCE

1. (SBU) PolOff, accompanied by Japanese and Pakistani
counterparts, met April 8 with MFA's Team Leader for Pakistan
Jesper Thomsen. Thomsen told us that the Danes will be
represented in Tokyo by MFA Political Director Carsten
Damsgaard, who will also soon assume additional duties as
Denmark's Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
2. (SBU) Thomsen confirmed that Denmark will provide 2
million Danish Kroner (approx. USD 350,000) in
counterterrorism assistance to Pakistan this year. Thomsen
expressed confidence that Denmark would make an additional
pledge of assistance in Tokyo, but would not speculate on the
amount, noting that this would be decided by FM Moeller and
Danish Minister for Development Assistance Ulla Toernaes this
week. Thomsen explained that while Denmark's main
development assistance effort remained targeted in Africa,
Denmark nevertheless was "committed to helping democratize
and stabilize" Pakistan, and thus was willing to consider
re-directing some bilateral assistance there.
