SUBJECT: GOG REQUESTS SUPPORT FOR UNESCO CANDIDACY
1. (SBU) Embassy is in receipt of a diplomatic note from the
Guinean Ministry of Foreign Affairs notifying the U.S.
Government of Guinea's intent to present itself as a
candidate for membership to the following UNESCO organs:
- Council for the Bureau of International Education (BIE)
- Intergovernmental Council for the Program for the
Management of Social Transformation (MOST)
- Intergovernmental Council for the International Program
for Development and Communication (PIDC)
- International Council of Coordination for the Program on
Man and the Biosphere (MAB)
2. (SBU) According to the note, the Guinean Government's
candidature signals its willingness to contribute to UNESCO's
agenda. As such, the Guinean Government formally requests
the USG's support during the General Conference, scheduled
for October 6 to 23 in Paris.
3. (SBU) Embassy is sending a diplomatic note to acknowledge
receipt of the request, specifying that it has been forwarded
to Washington for consideration. Post requests guidance as
to whether any further response is necessary at this time.
