IN EXPORT LICENSING
REF: STATE 50680
1. (SBU) Econoff with officers from the Japanese Embassy and
the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office in Australia on May
21 delivered reftel demarche to Dominic Trindad, Assistant
Secretary for Trade Policy and Industrials Branch at
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Trindade
said that though he could offer no formal response, the GOA
would take under consideration the request to cosponsor the
proposal on increasing transparency in export licensing.
2. (SBU) Trindade, who until earlier this year was at
Australia's mission in Geneva, noted the srong opposition
among larger developing country exporters to this proposal
when it was made earlier by Japan. He said that even if
Australia were unable to cosponsor, he would like to think
that Australia could engage positively on the substance. He
indicated that Australia's mission in Geneva would contact
the US, Japan, and Taiwan missions there.
