1. (S) We met with DFAT Assistant Secretary for Arms Control
and Counter-Proliferation John Sullivan April 15 to solicit
Australia's support for the latest E3 plus 3/P5 plus 1
approach to Iran, as described reftel. Sullivan was joined
by Acting Arms Control Director Chris King.
2. (S) Sullivan noted that Australia had always shared U.S.
objectives vis-a-vis Iran, including support for the P5 plus
1 package of incentives. He said he believed the GOA would
be able to make a public statement in favor of a renewed E3
plus 3 approach, as it had in the past toward similar
objectives .
3. (S) Regarding bilateral engagement with Iranian officials
in Tehran on the issue, Sullivan he would need to consult
with his geographic counterpart in DFAT, as it affected
broader GOA policy towards Iran. He mentioned he had made
similar representations to the Iranian ambassador in Canberra.
4. (S) King interjected that the renewed E3 plus 3 approach
would be very difficult, especially in light of Jalili's
public dismissal of attempts to get Iran to suspend
enrichment. (Note: King appeared to be referring to
Ahmadinejad's recent interview in Der Speigel in which he
said of efforts to get Iran to stop its enrichment
activities, "These discussions are old. The time for this is
over." End note.)
