(S/NF) March 31, Poloff approached Justin Whyatt, Director of
the Middle East Section, Australia's Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade, to request the GOA urge the Iranian
government through the resident Iranian Embassy and/or the
Australian Embassy in Tehran to release Roxana Saberi as a
humanitarian gesture. Mr. Whyatt, acknowledging the urgency
of the matter, provided an assurance that Australia would
pursue the matter through its Mission in Tehran or by means
of the Iranian Mission in Canberra. The text of the
Australian message to the Iranians and their response will be
provided septel.
