1. (SBU) Political Officer met with Mateo Estreme, a member
of Foreign Minister Taiana,s staff, to discuss the reftel
demarche. Estreme welcomed word of anticipated high-level
U.S. participation throughout the UNGA. He offered no
objections to the U.S. redlines, noting with approval in
particular the holocaust denial and anti-Semitism points. He
appreciated our communication and agreed that joint action
would send a stronger message.
2. (C) Estreme said he would convey the U.S. redlines
directly to his boss, the Foreign Minister's Chief of Staff,
to convey directly to the Minister (many of the top officials
in the MFA are already in New York). He could not say which
if any points would provoke an Argentine walkout, but
suggested it was possible. On the question of Iran in
particular, he said, current Argentine-Iran relations were so
difficult that it was not certain whether Argentina would be
in the room at all during President Ahmadinejad's address.
