1. (C) We provided ref A points to the Office of the Prime
Minister and senior officials at the Ministries of Defense
and Foreign Affairs. Dr. Peter Sztaray, Head of the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs' Department for Security and
Non-proliferation, subsequently noted that the Hungarian
Government was carefully evaluating a potential increase in
the number of its forces in Afghanistan. He stated both
Prime Minister Bajnai's December 1-5 trip to Washington and
the NATO Ministerial would impact the timing of the decision,
but said he was "quite hopeful about a positive outcome."
The Hungarian MOD Policy State Secretary, with whom we shared
the information, passed the points on to the Minister of
Defense.
