1. (SBU) POLOFF delivered ref A demarche November 3 to Anna
Miklos, MFA's Human Rights and International Organizations'
UN desk officer responsible for the Goldstone Report. Miklos
stated that the MFA has received a draft copy of the proposed
resolution outlined in ref A from the EU, commenting that the
text appears "more balanced" than the text submitted to the
Human Rights Commission in October. Responding to the USG
concerns over text that would refer the matter to the
International Court of Justice (ICJ),Miklos said that, in
her review of the proposed text, there is no mention of the
ICJ. While acknowledging GOH agreement with many of the
points outlined in ref A., Miklos commented that the MFA has
yet to establish a final position on the potential
resolution. She said that she will contact Hungary's UN
PermRep immediately to pass on the USG's comments concerning
the proposed resolution.
2. (SBU) POLOFF expressed appreciation for Hungary's support
during the recent Human Rights Commission special session on
the Goldstone Report, noting it was one of six countries who
joined the U.S. on the issue. Miklos responded that several
Arab League countries contacted Hungary after the vote to
express their displeasure with Hungary's stance on the issue.
