THE GOLDSTONE REPORT

1. (SBU) POLOFF delivered reftel demarche October 14 to Anna
Miklos, MFA's Human Rights and International Organizations'
desk officer for the Goldstone report. Miklos stated that
she will contact Hungary's UN PermRep immediately, as well as
their representative in Geneva, to pass on the USG's comments
and requests concerning the report.
2. (SBU) Miklos noted that, while the GOH is coordinating
its position with EU members, it agrees with many of the
points in the demarche. She stressed that the EU believes
that moving the report out of the Human Rights Council would
cause "irreparable damage" to the peace process.
Continuing, Miklos stated that "we cannot put aside the HRC
mandate" and Hungary takes the Goldstone Report seriously,
with the need to focus on what occurred rather than who
committed alleged acts.
