1. MFA NATO Section Head Peter Sztaray discussed reftel with
PolOff on February 24, stating that the Hungarian Government
is politically committed to staying with the NATO Training
Mission-Iraq at least through the end of 2009. Acknowledging
that the three-person Hungarian team awaits an agreement on
the status of NATO forces in Iraq prior to recommencing their
training mission, Sztaray conveyed the view that the current
negotiations are proceeding in a positive direction.
2. The DAO delivered the demarche in a separate meeting with
the Hungarian MoD International Department Deputy, Colonel
Istvan Toth. Colonel Toth, expressing his hope that the
Hungarian mission can continue, raised the following
questions:
- If the current NTM-I mission is extended past July 31st of
this year, for how long will it be extended?
- Will there be an annual resolution on the mission that will
require voting for further extensions?
- Who will fund this mission in the future - the EU, NATO, or
only from participating countries?
