PolOff discussed reftel points with Martin Pangrac of the
Security Policy Department of the Slovak MFA. Pangrac said that
Slovakia is one hundred percent in favor of granting Montenegro
entry into MAP, and agrees with the U.S. position. Pangrac also
said that Slovakia would also support MAP for Bosnia at this
December's Ministerial. While Pangrac conceded that achieving
consensus on Bosnia would in all likelihood not be possible, he
said that Slovakia believes granting Bosnia a MAP now would help
strengthen Bosnian resolve to reform. If consensus on MAP for
Bosnia cannot be reached, Pangrac said that Slovakia will push
for very positive and encouraging language. Pangrac said
Slovakia agrees with the U.S. position on Georgia, Ukraine, and
Macedonia, and underscored the importance of the open door
policy and the evaluation of potential alliance members on a
case-by-case basis.
