On May 6 Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) Attache spoke
with the Director General and the Director for Border Control
of ICA, Colombia's sanitary regulatory agency, with both
stating that Colombia is not going to ban imports of U.S. and
Canadian pork and pork products at this time. The statements
represent a change from previous discussions in which ICA
said it was considering the suspension of all new sanitary
import certificates for pork. Over the past several days,
both Colombian pork importers and the Colombian Association
of Pork Producers (ACP) expressed concern to ICA about the
negative impact a ban on pork products would have on
Colombian pork consumption. ICA has also told FAS Attache on
several occasions that there is no scientific reason for
banning pork products. Post will continue to monitor the
situation, using the Ref A points to urge the GOC to refrain
from imposing a partial or complete ban on U.S. pork
products, as needed.
