1. (SBU) MFA State Secretary Mirko Stefanovic told Charge on
November 13 that Serbia is well aware of the importance of the
upcoming Iran votes in the U.N. General Assembly Third Committee but
that it still has not reached a decision on how it will vote on the
no-action motion and country-specific resolution (reftel).
2. (SBU) In response, the Charge reiterated that these votes are
among our highest priorities, especially given the disturbing events
following the June presidential election and Iranian authorities'
recent decision to charge three AmCits with espionage. Pressing
Serbia to at least abstain or be absent, she also pointed out that
how Serbia chooses to vote will be closely monitored in European
capitals as Serbia moves toward eventual EU candidacy. Stefanovic
promised to pass this information on to Ministry leadership.
