SUBJECT: PRC: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON CHINA'S PLEDGE AT
SHARM AL-SHEIKH CONFERENCE FOR GAZA ASSISTANCE
REF: STATE 20388
Classified By: External Unit Chief Eric Barboriak.
Reasons 1.4 (b/d).
(C) China's assistance for Gaza pledged at the March 2 Sharm
al-Sheikh conference totaled USD 2.2 million, not 3.6 million
(as reported in the USG informal tally contained in reftel),
MFA West Asian and North African Affairs Department
Palestinian Authority (PA) and Israel Division Deputy
Director Xu Chen told POLOFF March 9. Xu blamed the mistake
on "interpreter error." Xu said that the funds would be
granted directly to the PA, and though China would seek the
PA's views on use of the funds, China expected that the funds
would support school reconstruction. China intended to
initiate a feasibility study to determine the best way to
deliver the funds, Xu said, adding that there was no specific
timetable for using the funds once the feasibility study was
completed.
