1. (C) SUMMARY: China wanted to gain the consent of Sudan
and the Africa Group regarding the UN Human Rights Council's
upcoming renewal of the mandate for the Sudan Special
Rapporteur, MFA International Organizations and Conferences
Department Human Rights Division Deputy Director Yao Shaojun
told POLOFF June 4 in response to reftel points urging China
to support a strong resolution extending the Sudan Special
Rapporteur mandate. Yao did not have any specific
information about Sudan resolutions that China would support
but stressed China's overall approach on such matters is to
consult with the state and regional group involved. He
congratulated the United States on winning a seat on the
Human Rights Council, noting that China looked forward to
"constructive engagement and the broadest possible
cooperation with the United States."
