TREATY OF AMITY AND COOPERATION

(U) The Ambassador delivered July 16 reftel dip note on the
intent of the United States to accede to
ASEAN,s Treaty of Amity and Cooperation to Ministry of
Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Virasakdi Futrakul. The
Ambassador told Virasakdi that Secretary Clinton would sign
the TAC with ASEAN nations during the Secretary,s visit
next week to Phuket . Virasakdi noted that the signing of
the TAC would be a historic step forward for U.S.-ASEAN
relations and said he would forward information detailing
plans for the signing ceremony.
